The prevalence of major depressive disorder is only 1% among Old Order Amish people. Needless to say, the low prevalence of major depressive disorder does not mean that hunter-gatherers and Old Order Amishes do not have tragic events in their life. For some reason, however, in hunter-gatherers and Old Order Amishes the periods of low mood, sadness and grief after adverse events in life does not seem to transform to episodes of major depressive disorder. |
