Decerebration by lesions at the mid-brain level will produce a very strongly spastic paralysis, with the extensor muscles in both upper and lower limbs being hypertonic (D), and with no prolonged period of "shock". Destruction of the cerebral cortex (decortication) leaving the red nucleus and basal ganglia intact, is similar to decerebration except that the hypertonia in the upper limb is in the flexors, and the degree of tone is influenced by the position of the head (A,B,C ).
