It is the early morning of August 8th, 20xx. NATO forces have been amassing on the border of Latvia for weeks, in response to aggressive moves by the Russian Federation. Tensions have been high, and both sides are prepared for war.
Suddenly, without warning, a nuclear bomb detonates in the center of Riga, the capital of Latvia. The explosion is devastating, leveling the city and killing tens of thousands of people.
The Latvian government is destroyed, and the country is plunged into chaos. Russia seizes the opportunity to invade, and within days they have taken over the entire country.
The NATO countries are horrified by the use of nuclear weapons, and they quickly move to condemn Russia. However, they are unwilling to risk a full-scale nuclear war, and so they do nothing to stop the Russian advance.
Latvia becomes the first country to fall to the Russian Federation, and the people of Latvia suffer greatly under Russian occupation.
