Istanbul winds are more than the mere sum of their direction and magnitude. For many residents of the city, they are living entities that lend a bit of their character to the city each time they blow by.
When the Lodos comes, it drowns. Our elders used to say "Okay, you can go out, but be back at 12, the Lodos is coming", because where the other winds do one kind of damage, the Lodos does a hundred. All the seamen agree the Lodos is a teary-eyed wind. Teary-eyed? It brings the rain. Another seaman sort of disagrees - "Yes, the Lodos is teary-eyed. After this wind, it rains, but it's not because of the Lodos. It's the northern winds that battle it. The Lodos comes, and then the northern winds start to push it back. That's what causes the rain. Winds battle over Istanbul, each trying to assert ts own place."
But you know, this Lodos we had on Tuesday? It's not over yet. The north winds cut it off and we had a bit of rain, but the Aegean is strong. It'll be back soon.
So Istanbul residents don't decide about their daily habits, the winds blowing in the city do.

No savas puses varu piebilst, ka tas vējš nemaz nešķita draudīgs. Diena bija pelēka, nomākusies. Vējš sākumā nemaz tik stiprs nebija, turklāt šķiet to vairāk varēja just tieši pats ūdens, nevis cilvēki, kas atradās virs ūdens. Tikai gaiss bija tāds dīvains, kā pirms negaisa vasarās.
Baigākais skats, ko atceros - izkāpām no autobusa, pa lietu aizskrējām līdz piestātnei, nostājāmies drošā un apjumtā vietā, gaidījām Māri un skatījāmies uz jūru. Ik pa laikam margām paršļācās te lielāks, te mazāks vilnis. Un ik pēc aptuveni piecām minūtēm laikam devītais vilnis metās pāri ar tādu spēku, ka noklāja netālu no margām izvietotās āra kafejnīcas galdus un krēslus.
Šādā reizē iestājas bezspēcība, jo es jau tam vējam neko padarīt nevaru. Jācer vien, ka tas nesāks pūst dienā, kad jābrauc, piemēram, uz lidostu.
